For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to become a runner, which might sound a little crazy if you know me. Maybe it is the discipline and mental strength that runners seem to have that always pulled me in. Every time I have tried to start running, I have actually loved it, but life would get busy and the habit would slowly fade away.
Now, as a stay at home mom of two girls, one of them a toddler with autism, I am realizing just how much I need a consistent outlet for my mental health. I am starting to see that running is not just exercise, it is a powerful way to manage stress, clear my mind, and feel like myself again.
I’m finding I need the mental health outlet and what better hobby than one that makes you forget all your problem because you’re so busy trying to breathe, while also giving you that freeing, almost flying feeling. I have also come to the conclusion that if my husband can have golf, working on his Jeep, and a long list of other hobbies that get him out of the house, then this mom deserves one too.
If I am being completely honest with myself, I have a bigger goal behind all of this. I would love to run a half marathon next March in Napa in honor of autism and in celebration of my daughter. Having that goal in mind makes this journey feel more meaningful and gives me something real to work toward on the days when motivation feels low.
Here are some beginner running essentials that are helping me stay consistent:
If you are just starting your running journey, having the right tools can make all the difference. These are the beginner running essentials that are helping me stay consistent, feel more confident, and actually enjoy the process. If you are trying to build a running habit, this is a great place to start.
Supportive Running Shoes
One of the most important things for any beginner runner is a good pair of running shoes. The right shoes can help prevent injury, support your joints, and make your runs feel so much better. If running has ever felt uncomfortable in the past, it might have been your shoes. Here are some great affordable beginner running shoes that won’t break the bank.

A Reliable Treadmill
Since I am in a season where I need to stay home, my treadmill has been a game changer. It allows me to get my run in without worrying about weather, safety, or leaving the house. It also makes it easier to stay consistent because it removes so many excuses.
Couch to 10K App
Using a structured running plan has helped me take the guesswork out of getting started. The Couch to 10K app gradually builds your endurance so you do not feel overwhelmed. It is perfect if you are starting from zero or getting back into running after a break.
Comfortable Workout Clothes
I used to think this did not matter, but it really does. Wearing an outfit that isn’t too big and drags you down or too tight and uncomfortable can completely change your mindset. When you feel put together, you are so much more likely to show up and stay consistent. I personally love some lightweight moisture wicking t-shirts and long 8″ bike shorts that stay up, don’t catch between my thighs and are lightweight.

Wireless Headphones
Having something to listen to makes running so much more enjoyable. Whether it is music, a podcast, or an audiobook, it helps pass the time and keeps you motivated. I personally like to look up running playlists on Spotify and crank them up as loud as possible. Below are a great headphone choice for running because they have a great fit and loop over your ears so they don’t fall out.

A Simple Fitness Tracker
Tracking your time, distance, and progress can be incredibly motivating as a beginner runner. Seeing your improvement over time makes you want to keep going and proves that your effort is paying off. Right now I am using my Apple Watch to track my runs but I don’t think its vey accurate and I’d like to ask for the Garmin Forerunner 55 as a Mother’s Day gift idea. It’s a great beginner friendly running watch that is super easy to use, has a built in GPS with accurate tracking and gives suggested workouts which is amazing when you are a beginner runner starting out.
